DIY Lid Snow Globe Ornaments

One of my favorite things to do each year is to make keepsake ornaments for our Christmas tree. I love seeing how my kids have grown through the years as I decorate the tree. What's wonderful about these ornaments is their versatility—you can use materials readily available at home and you can customize the pictures and ribbon or decorartions to match your style.

Materials You'll Need: SHOP MATERIALS HERE

  1. Lid: Reuse jar lids or any circular base. Make sure you have room to add the snow.

  2. Picture

  3. Fake Snow and/or Glitter

  4. Plastic Sheet: Recycle plastic from packaging or use clear mylar to enclose the snow.

  5. Pictures: Choose your favorite snapshots or cut-outs

  6. Ribbon

  7. Glue

  8. Puffy paint

Creating Your Snow Globe Ornaments:

  1. Prepare the Base: Take a lid or circular base and trace the size on whatever picture you plan on using. Glue the picture to the inside of the lid and once the glue is dry, fill it with fake snow and glitter.

  • Cut the Plastic Sheet: Cut a piece of plastic sheeting or mylar to fit the size of your lid.

  • Seal It Together: Apply glue along the edges of the plastic sheet and affix it securely to the lid, ensuring no snow or glitter can escape. I've used both hot glue and craft glue in the past and they both work well.

  • Attach the Ribbon: Glue ribbon around the edges of the lid. I also added a bow to the top as well as a loop to hang the ornament from.

  • Add Puff Paint: I don't like the messy look of the glue through the plastic front so I like to add a border of puffy white paint around the edge to hide it.

  • Hang and Enjoy!

I love that each ornament becomes a mini time capsule! They make great parent or grandparent gifts but would also be great to give as hostess or anniversary gifts as well. There are so many ways to personalize this project like using different materials or adding small trinkets inside the snow globe.

If you decide to give this a try, I'd love to see how your snow globe ornaments turned out!
