Peek-Through Gingerbread House Ornaments

What could be cuter than DIY cardboard gingerbread house ornaments? Thank you for asking: gingerbread house ornaments with teeny tiny faces peeking out! They are especially adorable when illuminated by the glow of twinkling tree lights.

These little cuties are made using materials easily found around the house and are completely customizable.

Materials Needed: SHOP ITEMS HERE

  1. Thin cardboard

  2. Utility knife or sharp cutting blade

  3. Paint pens, puffy paint, glitter, stickers (anything for decorating)

  4. Tracing paper with printed pictures (for house details)

  5. Glue

  6. Ribbon for hanging

Step 1: Cut out your design

You can get as creative as you want for these little ornaments. I recommend using thin cardboard such as cereal boxes or tissue boxes to make your life easier. Thicker cardboard can be trickier to cut. If you have a cutting machine, such as a cricut, you could use an svg file to get the shape you want but that's definitely not a necessary requirement for this craft.

The important part is to remeber to cut a window for each face you want to include. If you don't feel comfortable adding the cross bars in the window, give yourself permission to just cut a simple square. It will still be adorable!

Step 2: Decorate your house

You can either draw these details by hand or use fun stickers, ribbons, glitter glue, etc. I like to use paint pens to draw the icing details as well as puffy paint for pretend snow. If you like a little glitter you can add some to the puffy paint while it's still wet.

Step 3: Print pictures on tracing paper

For this step you need tracing paper and a printer. It took me a few tries to get the faces the exact size that I wanted but I love how the light can shine through them when they are on the tree. If you don't have a printer, you could get a few pictures printed at your local print shop to use (they just won't be transparent or allow any light to shine through).

Once your pictures are printed, glue them to the back of your ornament. You can use any craft glue for this part.

Step 4: Hang and Enjoy!

With a piece of string or ribbon, create loops to hang your gingerbread house ornaments on your Christmas tree and admire those cute little faces glowing through the windows.

You really can't go wrong with making these. They would make a cute keepsake ornament for your own tree or would be a really fun crafting activity to do with kids or friends. Add whatever fun decorations or details make you happy and have a blast.

Happy crafting!
